Water Conservation

Water conservation can be very rewarding! Summertime is the highest water consumption time of year - usage can triple! The increase is due to various activities including:

  • Auto Washing
  • Filling Swimming and Wading Pools
  • Gardening
  • Lawn Watering
  • Outside Cleaning

Conservation Guidelines

Some guidelines to follow to conserve water are:

  • Respect the odd/even watering program and set your irrigation system accordingly.
  • Use a shut-off nozzle on your hose. Do not waste water by letting it run freely out of the hose.
  • Check faucets and toilets for leaks and check water softeners and central humidifiers for proper operation.
  • Shut off your water system when vacationing.

Odd / Even Watering Program

Effective January 1, 2009, increased watering restrictions for Mahtomedi residents were implemented. In the past, odd numbered addresses watered on odd days and even addresses watered on even days during the restriction period of May 1 to September 30. In addition to that requirement, the new restriction will prohibit residents and businesses from watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. This modified ordinance will ensure watering in an effective manner. Watering during the heat of the day is wasteful, half of all water applied during the day is lost to evaporation, wind, and over watering!

Please note: This restriction does not apply to activities such as washing your vehicle. Even so, if you wash your car in the evening or morning, you will help conserve water! Using a spray nozzle on the hose while washing the vehicle will also help minimize water that flows into the storm sewers.
